What Advantage Soft Starter Provides for Industrial Applications

by Nancy Jemes Blogger
Usually you would see an induction motor connected directly to the power supply and drawing a constant magnetizing current at full speed and it doesn’t matter on what the load is on the motor. If anything is less than full load then the power factor of induction motor is less than its rated power because the torque producing current decreases as load decreases, but during this process magnetizing current does not change.

A motor with standard range is almost chosen with a related power in excess of maximum load demand. This motor never achieves their rated power factor in excess of maximum load demand.

Therefore, soft starter becomes the most viable solution to address such challenges and provide smooth and energy-controlling start process for the motor, and soft start motor manufacturers provides multiple types of start motors which are applicable for multiple industrial applications.

Features of Soft Starter Motor

  • A soft starter has the fastest payback period and it avoids the fluid hammer.

  • It is mainly designed for extreme operating conditions and is also easy to install.

  • The soft starter has two set point current limits and it serves instantaneous protection of the motor.

  • Diagnostic and early warning functions such as locked rotor, overload, under load, etc.

  • A limited number of starts per hour and it depends on the starting condition and thermal specification of the soft motor.

  • It has crawl speed features for positioning.

Advantages of Soft Starter Motor

A soft starter is used on high tension motor with the following advantage:

  • It provides smooth starting by torque control for a slow acceleration of the drive system and prevents jerks and increases the life of mechanical components.

  • Reduction in starting current to achieve break-away, to prevent the electrical, mechanical and thermal weakening of the electrical equipment such as cables, motors, transformers and gear switch and it holds back of the current during acceleration.

  • It has the capability of increasing the motor starting duty by reducing the temperature rise in supply transformer and stator windings.

  • A soft starter has a software control in their microprocessor version that responds at the time of full speed which economizes energy. This feature has benefits for most installations, not only where the load is variable.

Soft Start Motor Applications

Soft start motors are used in different industries like steel industries (rolling mills and processing lines), cement industry, paper and pulp, rubber and plastic, textiles industries, machine tool applications, power sector, water supply scheme and various process control systems.

The starting performance of the induction motor using soft start motor provides valuable economics of electrical energy. When a motor duty involves frequent start and stop cycles then the motor gains many benefits, but it is still likely when the system is continuously in operation. So, to maximize the usage and function of your motor, consult a professional soft start motor manufacturer to get the most suitable and high-performance soft start motor for your industrial application.
