Image Once of the great advantages of eCommerce websites is the ability to track visitors that visit your site. Reporting tools, that help you track visitors, will help you make changes, create offers, and take better care of your potential customers. And, ultimately, will lead to increased sales. I will discuss in this article two things:
  1. Identify one statistical tracking resource that works for your site.
  2. Browse through the tracker tools to identify where most of your traffic is concentrated and how long visitors are staying on your site.
Tracking Statistics

With a website, you have the opportunity to track and gather various statistics about the people that visit your site. You may gather such data as number of page hits, number of unique visitors, time spend on each page, where your visitors are coming from, and other information that is vital to your business. This information is an essential part of any marketing campaign. It may also help identify marketing tools that are working for your business and which are not.

Statistical Tracking Resources

Chances are that your web-building program has some type of tracking software included with it. However, it if does not, or if you simply want better tracking software, there are plenty of options available to you.

One website that offers tracking services for FREE is StatCounter (www.statcounter.com). Visit the site and investigate their services. You may find that they have exactly what you are looking for, or you may want something more sophisticated. Either way, it may provide a good starting point from which to proceed. Other free tracking software may be found at these websites:
  • Site Miter, Inc. (www.sitemeter.com)
  • GoldStats (www.goldstats.com)
  • WEB CEO (www.webceo.com
  • Goggle Analytics (www.google.com/analytics
  • FeedJit (www.feedjit.com - free basic service and paid advanced features)
For specific fees, most programs offer software that is more sophisticate. I recommend purchasing software that is more advanced if you are able to do so and afford it. It will enable you to track such factors as traffic from specific keywords and words that a buyer used to search for your site. With this kind of software, you not only know what words are receiving the best results, as far as traffic goes, but also which words are bringing in paying customers. Professional tracking software may ultimately save you advertising dollars. It is always a good thing to use the major search engines to find and locate additional site-tracking tools.

In addition, if you are using a tracking service, remember to place the tracking code on every page of your site. If you only put it on your homepage, the homepage will be the only page for which it will generate statistics. By placing the code on every page, you will be able to track each page making the most of your online presence.
