Before anyone creates a website, he or she should consider Natural Search Engine Optimization. In other words, before you begin to build a site, you need to understand HOW people will locate your site on the Internet and then optimize your site to make it easy to locate.

Your site is often located on the Internet by computer programs called Search Engines. Search engines look for keywords or keyword phrases that are entered into a search engine's memory. After a search is complete, a search engine will display all of the references that it found. Therefore, keywords are crucial for potential customers to locate your site.

Most competitors' websites do not use keywords to their full advantage; thus, effective keywords may grant you an advantage over your competitors. Most competitors might use only 10 to 15 keywords or phrases. In order for you to outdo your competitors, you should come up with a list of 400 keywords or phrases.

The following sites may help you create keywords for your site:

  • Wordtracker's Keywords...(http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com)
  • Overture's Keyword Selector Tool...(http://inventory.overture.com)
  • Digital Point Solutions' Keyword Suggestion Tool...(www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion)

With hundreds of keyword phrases, even if some of your phrases are not searched for hundreds of thousands of times a month, you will still have hundreds of words with thousands of searches; and that adds up quickly. You will be ranked higher for having many words, instead of being ranked lower for having only a few words. Having hundreds of keywords will set you apart from the competition.

Even though you have a list of 400 keyword phrases, you will not be able to use all your keywords on one page. This is where you can create new pages based upon the searches of other people. For example, many searches may be performed for the phrase, "what is memory foam", or for "how does memory foam work". These are excellent topics to write on if you are creating a site on memory foam mattresses. Also, you would not use such words as air-bed on your page about memory foam. So try to limit the types of words to specific pages of your website. In addition, a huge list of keywords should help you write better content, have more substance and topics to write about, and help you to attract more traffic than your competition.
