For those seeking adventure, looking to take in some sightseeing or just appreciating the great outdoors during their Playa del Carmen excursion, Cozumel is the best destination to add to their itinerary. One of the biggest advantages while on a trip to Playa del Carmen is that you can plan a day excursion to Cozumel aboard a luxury yacht rental in Playa Del Carmen. Diving in Cozumel is popular amongst the passionate water sports enthusiast across the world for it is home to some incredible dive sites. Other reasons that make scuba diving off the island of Cozumel, Mexico, one of the best choices in the world include.

• Weather – The weather in Cozumel remains warm and enjoyable year-round. Due to its location, just off of the Yucatan peninsula in Caribbean waters, less variation in temperature can be observed year-round especially when it comes to the temperature both in and out of the water. This means that Cozumel scuba diving offers constant comfortable temperature for everyone.

• Crystal Clear Waters – Cozumel is an ongoing parade of thrilling underwater adventures. The currents of the Yucatan channel are in constant movement, so the visibility is quite sparkling through-out the whole year, thus making it a paradise for water sports enthusiast.

SCUBA DIVING IN COZUMEL

Most of the diving sites can be found within the boundaries of Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park – protector of the second largest barrier reef system in the world – the Mesoamerican Reef System. The park is home to 26 types of corals with more than 100 subspecies. More than 500 fish species live in the park, including the endemic splendid toadfish. Divers enjoy the opportunity of seeing loggerhead, hawksbill and green turtles due to the life protection programs practiced here. From shallow sheltered shore dives to secluded seldom visited current-swept drift dives, there’s a dive site in Cozumel for everyone.

GREAT DIVE SITES IN COZUMEL

1. PUNTA SUR REEF – Considered one of the best dive sites in Cozumel, ethereal dive consists of a deep wall with caverns and fissures. Remarkable swim-troughs will take you down to the Devil's Throat, a narrow tunnel lined with red sponges. The swim through lasts a few seconds only, but creates unforgettable memories! Usual angelfish and butterfly fish can always be spotted swimming in pairs along the reefs edge. The deeper coral walls, large black corals, brightly colored small gorgonian sea fans, such as the deep-water fan, and sea whips, and devil's sea whip can also be found in this dive site.

2. PALANCAR GARDEN – Divers of all levels will enjoy the slight-to-moderate current that carries them along while exploring the many finger coral formations here. While the fish life in this area is not as great as other reefs, the tall coral formations and the plants and creatures attached to them make this a memorable dive. The best dive locations include Palancar Horseshoe, Palancar Caves, Palancar Garden, Palancar Shallows, and Palancar Deep. In terms of sea life, you can come across angelfish, sunfish, crabs, sea turtles, spiny lobster, toadfish to name a few.

3. COLUMBIA WALL – As compared to other sites, it is a relatively isolated site which divers frequently visit to share their diving with eagle rays, turtles, and large barracuda. Although the healthy coral reef crowns a steep drop off yet the massive coral pinnacles rise 15 meters/50 feet from the bottom. If you head to the infinite depths, you might come across nurse sharks while they prowl the reefs and walls.
