Used or refurbished smartphones: when is it convenient?

by Hussain Deewan Web design and development services

Today we are talking about a sector that has been growing very much in recent years and especially in the last period and that is the one that concerns reconditioned devices.

Everyone talks about it but few know exactly what kind of products it is ...

Let's start by giving an explanation to the word " Refurbished " or " Refurbished ":

"In principle we can indicate as reconditioning , that process consisting of various repairs of a device, from a functional, mechanical and aesthetic point of view to bring that object to a condition almost like new".

Put simply, when they sell you for example a "refurbished" smartphone, you are buying a device that has already been used by another user and that subsequently, a specialized company has refurbished   and offered for sale.

As used , the seller cannot pass it off as new but will still have to offer you a 12 month guarantee (against 24 for a brand new product); some sellers, however, in rare cases, to liquidate some unsold stocks decide to “sell off” devices that have never been opened before, as reconditioned, being able to apply a lower price to customers and thus offering a more limited guarantee over time.

The reconditioned are then divided into various types and each company identifies them based on the aesthetic and functional conditions in which they are sold: they can vary from the best A +, A, B, to move to the less prestigious C or D.

Now that we understand what it is, why should we choose to buy a refurbished device instead of a new one?

Well, the only real reason is the price !

Usually (not always though) the "refurbished" device has a lower cost than its "new" alter ego and therefore even those who do not have large sums to invest, can often afford the smartphone of their dreams.

On the internet there are dozens of classifieds sites with used Smartphones or Tablets, sold by private individuals with soooo advantageous prices ... Why should we spend more on a "refurbished" which is still not a new device?

Well the answer is very simple even if not for everyone it is obvious, but we will give you a simple example to make you understand better.

Let's take the automotive sector:

New purchased car  at  20.000 € of expenditure, but with at least 24 months of guarantee, 100% functional and perfect from every point of view;

Car purchased used by a private individual  at € 10,000 of expenditure, 0 months of warranty, little possibility of ascertaining the quality of each functional part;

Car purchased used by the dealership  at € 15,000 of expenditure, at least 12 months of warranty, the various functions have been ascertained by the dealer.

As for cars, devices such as smartphones and tablets if purchased "used / reconditioned" from a specialized company, for a higher price than the sale of the private individual, however , offer some guarantees and certainties that otherwise the buyer could not receive .

In the case of smartphones, the problem of functional checks by the buyer is even more complex than in the world of cars. Thousands are cases in Italy of purchases that went wrong in the sale between private individuals, blocks of IMEI (for installments not paid by the previous owner to the telephone operator) and various operating problems are on the agenda and often an alleged "Deal" is turns into a "rip off" within a short time of purchase!

So if I buy from a company specializing in the sale of refurbished products, am I on the safe side?

Alas, the answer is a peremptory NO!

Unfortunately, there are dozens of Italian and foreign companies and websites that offer refurbished devices, often at prices that are all too advantageous ; there are many companies that existed some time before, operating in other sectors, have re-proposed themselves with the refurbished market, riding the wave of the great demand for these products by the consumer, but at the expense of the latter; the inexperience of the sector on the part of these companies, especially in the technical field, means that often behind "great offers" are hidden devices of dubious origin, often arriving from foreign markets and not fully compatible with the networks of our telephone operators, or in other (many) cases these companies do not really answer under warranty, since they do not have departments dedicated to assistance, thus creating enormous inconvenience to customers .

What can I do to make sure I don't take a rip-off?

There are some aspects to consider that can offer you greater security in the purchase:

Check how long the company has existed;

Check that all references are included on the website including the operational office as well as the legal office;

Inquire if the company also deals with the technical part (mobile repairs and assistance IN or OUT guarantees);

Check the reviews of other customers, especially in the FB pages of these companies, if they are almost all positive and there are many, probably other customers have found themselves really well;

Before buying the device from the company you have chosen, check that it is the right market price by comparing it with that of other companies!

If the price is much lower, a rip-off is almost certainly hidden.

Do you at UAE Technician  deal with refurbished?

Of course yes, we at UAE Technician  have also introduced the sale of refurbished smartphones among our services .

In our UAE Technician  Stores you can find, according to the availability of the moment, used and reconditioned Smartphones with attached guarantees or the "reconditioned classic" that we find for various customers based on need, through suppliers of our trust and which we have selected over time .

Each device sold by us is scrupulously checked by our technicians, who carry out maintenance work if necessary before making it operational for our next customer.

Today as today it is almost always Apple products; in fact, they are the only ones that maintain the price well over time and can offer advantages to the buyer and seller.
