Kanchipuram silk sarees are hand woven in the narrow lanes of a small town by the same name. It has magnificent temples of unique architectural beauty bearing eloquent testimony to its glorious Dravidian heritage. It is known as the temple city, and is also known as the city of thousand temples. Kanchipuram fell under rule of the Pallava Kings from 6th to 7th century AD and later under Cholas, Vijayanagar Kings, the Muslim and the British. It was the historical capital of the Pallavas during the time when they built some of the best temples in the city.

History has it that Kanchipuram rose to eminence in Krishna Deva Raya’s reign, about 400 years ago. The two weaving communities – the Devangas and the Saligars migrated to Kanchipuram from the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. In this seemingly miniscule town there were 129 beautifully detailed temples and silks were always considered ceremonial wear at religious rituals and weddings. The Devanga and Saligar weavers were well reputed for their silk weaving skills and even today the mainstay of the people of Kanchipuram is weaving.

Kanchipuram silk sarees are a luxury and sometimes make family heirlooms. They are an integral part of south Indian weddings and celebrations. The heavy sarees with silk weaves and intricate borders are very popular throughout India. Simple contrast border sarees or those with zari dot motifs and patterns are authentic and elegant with their rare and superior color combinations.

Kanchipuram sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk. The industry in Kanchipuram is made up only of handloom weavers and merchants and does not manufacture silk or any other raw material that goes into the making of the silk saree.

The main raw materials are mulberry silk thread, metallic thread (Zari) and dye. Zari is made from dipping the silk thread into liquid gold and silver. This serves to enhance the beauty and the value of the silk saree. The mulberry silk thread comes from the neighboring state of Karnataka, the metallic thread which is interwoven with the silk to give the metallic look comes from the state of Gujarat, and the dyes too are not manufactured in Kanchipuram. However, the materials are imported into the town, and the skilled artisans weave them on handlooms, creating a unique hand-made masterpiece in each saree.

Earlier the designs of the Kanchipuram silk saree were restricted to conservative stripes and the gold dot motifs. Nowadays you see the sun, moon, chariots, peacocks, parrots, swans, lions, coins, mangoes and leaves interwoven into the pattern. Kanchipuram silk sarees often have richly woven pallus depicting the paintings of the painter Ravi Varma or scenes from the great epics – the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
