The BMW M3 is a high-performance executive car developed by BMW from 1986-2018. It features a rear-wheel drive layout and was available in coupe and convertible body styles. The M3 was rebranded as the 4 Series range in 2014, making it a sedan vehicle. From 1986 to 2018, the BMW M3 was produced in five generations, which are as follows:


E30/36/46 Generation

The BMW M3 first generation was introduced in 1986-1991, featuring a 2-door 2+2 coupe and 2-door convertible body style, a 2.0-2.5 L S14 I4 engine, and a 5-speed manual transmission.

The BMW M3's second generation, produced between 1992 and 1999, featured various models with a 3.0-3.2 L S50/S52 I6 engine. In 1995, a facelift increased engine displacement, upgraded manual transmission, and added clear indicator lenses. 


The BMW M3's third generation, produced from 2000 to 2006, featured a 2-door 2+2 coupe and convertible body style, a 3.2 L S54 I6 and 4.0 L P60 V8 engine. 


E90/E92/E93 Generation

The BMW M3 fourth generation, produced from 2007 to 2013, featured a 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, and 2-door convertible, featuring a 4.0 to 4.4 L S65 V8 engine and dual-clutch transmission. 


F80 Generation

The fifth generation of the BMW M3 was produced from 2014-2018, featuring a 4-door sedan body style and a 3.0L S55 twin-turbo I6 engine, following a split from the 4 Series coupe and convertible.
