Understanding Shoulder Pain– Know The Risk Factors
Shoulder
pain is the third most common reason why people seek musculoskeletal
consultation in primary care. Approximately, 16 to 26 percent of
people experience shoulder pain, as shown by self-reported survey. Almost 1
percent adults report new pain in shoulders, every year.
Most
of us have experienced shoulder pain sometimes in our life. This is the pain
which arises from or near your shoulder. It can restrict free movement of our
shoulder joint and cause major pain. Here we list a few risk factors which can
contribute to develop persistent shoulder pain:
Sports And
Athletics
Athletes who engage in sports known for overhead injuries or
are impact driven, are more than likely to result in a shoulder injury. It can
also cause persistent pain in shoulders.
People who lift weights or are used to extreme exercise and
physical training are also prone to developing shoulder pain. Rarely though,
morning or evening jogs can also cause a jerk in shoulder, resulting in pain.
Occupation Related
Injuries
Physical occupations that require drilling, digging or other
repetitive actions increase chances of shoulder injuries. Exposure and use of
vibration causing machinery will also lead to the same.
Construction
workers, welders, hairdressers, production line workers, and cashiers are at
particularly higher risk. Similarly, desk jobs can also induce shoulder pain if
they require working on a computer for several hours, resulting in crouching
and posture problems.
Psychosocial Factors
Of Pain
Although only weak associations are observed, psychosocial
problems can cause shoulder pain. Job stress, social support, unemployment and
societal pressures can all lead to pain sensation in your shoulders.
Common Causes Of
Shoulder Pain
The above mentioned risk factors can cause injury to the
shoulder joint. Your shoulder is not one intact structure; it is made of
joints, bones and ligaments. Hence, an injury affecting any of these parts can
result in pain. The pain can be continuous, or felt only when you move it.
Certain conditions may require medical treatment.
There are four common causes of shoulder pain, which are:
tendon problems, arthritis, instability and fracture. Other less common ones
are tumors, nerve related problems, and infection. Furthermore, tendon issues
can include bursitis (inflammation of cushioning bursae), tendinitis (wearing
down of tendons), or tendon tears.
