Types of Infertility Treatments
Assisted Reproductive Technology or ART helps in addressing problems of infertility. In Vitro Fertilization(IVF) was the only form of infertility treatment earlier but now there are several techniques that can help couples to become parents. Couples looking forward to undergoing infertility treatment can go through the below techniques and decide on the one that best suits them:
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF):
The meaning of In Vitro is ‘in glass’, under this type of fertility treatment fertilization happens outside the body. After the fertilization, the embryos are placed in the uterus. The treatment is best suited for women suffering with unexplained infertility, severe endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, deteriorated production of egg ( a problem found especially in older women) and immune problems.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI):
This is basically used in the treatment of infertility problems related to sperm. This process helps in boosting the fertilization process of In Vitro Fertilization. A single sperm is inserted into a mature egg after which the fertilized egg is placed in the woman’s fallopian tube.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI):
IUI is a procedure in which processed sperm are directly placed into the female partner’s uterus at the time of ovulation. The duration of the whole process is quite brief and it is almost entirely painless. It can be performed with the male partner’s sperm as well as a donor’s sperm.
Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE):
This is also a form of Assisted Reproductive Technology where the sperm is surgically extracted from the testes. After this, the ICSI process is followed to complete the infertility treatment.
Micro-Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA):
In this type of infertility treatment the sperm is extracted surgically from the epididymis. Men who have no sperm when they ejaculate can take help from this Assisted Reproductive Technology. The ICSI procedure is then conducted after the sperm is taken from the man.
Sub-Zonal Insemination (SUZI):
This type of infertility treatment is used when there is male-infertility involved. The sperm is unable to penetrate the barriers that surround the ovum. The IVF technique is used in this method and sperms are injected underneath the outer layer of the egg. After the fertilization the blastocyst is placed in the woman’s uterus.
Micro-Insemination Sperm Transfer (MIST):
The sperm in this treatment is transferred into the perivitelline space or PVS with a micromanipulator.
Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT):
In GIFT treatment, the sperm and ovum are mixed outside the body and immediately placed in the fallopian tubes. To have a GIFT the woman needs to have healthy fallopian tubes as the process of pregnancy would happen naturally after the treatment. This type of infertility treatment costs lesser than the IVF.
Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT):
When a sperm cell unites with an egg cell the resultant cell is known as zygote. This type of infertility treatment is somewhat similar to the GIFT but unlike the GIFT where just a mixture of sperm and egg is placed in the fallopian tube the zygote is placed here.
For couples who are looking forward for the treatments should be mentally prepared to undergo several tests and also be ready to bear the costs for infertility treatment. All the above treatments are effective; all you need is a good IVF center to undergo the treatment. You can locate a good IVF Center in India by looking up on the internet.
