Endometriosis and Infertility
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a tissue that lines the uterus of a woman. When this tissue grows outside the uterus cavity, the condition is known as endometriosis. For a woman who is having her menstruation the blood is discharged through her vagina but for those suffering with endometriosis, the blood and tissue go back in the abdominal cavity. This causes severe pain. The tissue that grows outside is usually found on the bladder or bowels, under or on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, front or behind the uterus, uterine ligaments and uterine ligaments.
Every month the lining of the uterus grows thick and makes women ready for conception but when pregnancy doesn't happen the uterus lining shed and women menstruate. The growth which is outside the uterus in endometriosis also bleeds but since there is no way for the blood to go out. Women suffering with this experience pain, inflammation and scar tissue develop. Bleeding or blockage of the intestines may also happen and women may also suffer from bladder functioning problems.
Cause of Endometriosis
There is no specific cause as to why endometriosis happens in women. While some theories suggest it is a condition that runs in the family others say that while menstruating, the menstrual tissues move back through the fallopian tube in the abdomen where the implant grows.
Symptoms of Endometriosis
Women suffering with endometriosis suffer with extreme pain in the pelvic area.
Infertility is one of the most common symptoms in endometriosis. Intestinal and lower back pains are also common.
Heavy menstrual periods and menstrual cramps can get severe and the pain will increase with time. Those suffering with this condition could also experience premenstrual spotting or bleeding between periods.
Another symptom woman with endometriosis face is painful urination and bowel movements. They could also have gastrointestinal symptoms.
Endometriosis and Infertility
About 40% of women who have endometriosis are infertile. A laparoscopy lets the doctors look into the abdominal cavity through which endometriosis is confirmed. Severe endometriosis causes distortion of pelvis and pelvic scarring. The ovaries usually contain the endometriotic cysts and tubes can be blocked or damaged - all this can lead to infertility.
The treatment for endometriosis will be different for every woman depending on its location, symptoms, severity, pain, age and length of infertility.
Surgical treatment for mild endometriosis helps in improving fertility and also relieves from pain. Intrauterine insemination and controlled ovarian hyper stimulation can be used for women with mild endometriosis.
For women suffering with severe endometriosis the improving rate for infertility is low. This is because women with severe case of endometriosis have distorted pelvic anatomy thus other ways of infertility treatment don't seem to work.
