Types of Foot Patterns Explained

by Joseph Hawkins Marketing Manager

Footwear is more important than you think; they don't determine where you go but definitely how you go there.

I'm sure you already know that your gait says a lot about you, but the shoes you wear influence that gait.

Your shoes are not only a tell-tale sign of your personality, as people said in the good old days, but also of the many issues you face with walking or running.

The answer to this lies beneath your feet, quite literally!

The patterns of wear and tear formed at the bottom of your shoes can tell you if something is wrong.

Identifying Types Of Foot Patterns

  1. Normal

Foot problems can mess with you in subtle ways, and you won't even realize why you experience a certain kind of foot pain until you are aware of the basic foot problems.

Well, there are a few giveaways for normal foot patterns, and you're among the lucky people out there to not have an issue with your feet.

To know you're one among this lot, check the bottom of your foot for wear and tear in the middle of the heel. Here's where your foot first hits the ground when you walk. You should also check the middle of the balls of your feet.

If the foot impressions are in the right place, then you have a normal foot pattern.

2. Overpronator

Some problems are always unknown because we fail to identify them. One such problem is overpronation.

Overpronation is a foot condition in which your foot rolls inward as you move. In this case, the outer edge of your heels hit the ground first, and then your feet roll inwards onto the arch. Flat feet is the common term for overpronation.

Thus, the best way to know if you’re an overpronator is observing wear on the inside edges of the heels and balls of your shoes.

3. Supinator

On the contrary to overpronation, supination is a condition in which the weight of a person leans to the outward portion of their feet.

Supinators tend to experience more ankle pains and sprains than their counterparts. If you’re among those people experiencing similar problems quite often, then you should check if you have supination.

Before you visit a podiatrist, you can self-examine in the following way. Check the base of your shoes to see if there are any wears on the outside edges of your heels and outsides of the balls of your feet.

What To Do Next?

If you find yourself with any of the above conditions, don’t worry. There are a couple of exercises you can do to alleviate the pain or correct the condition.

The advisable thing to do is purchase shoes specially designed to serve your foot condition, as it can make a lot of difference in the way you feel and your gait too.
