Two Important but Oft Overlooked Principles of Mobile App Development

If you are considering building an app for your business, then no doubt you are undertaking many hours of research. You need to do this so that you understand how to build an app that will function well and that will be popular.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to create a mobile app for a restaurant, retail outlet, ballet class, whatever, you need to keep the principles of good design in mind at all times – or rather your ballet class, retailer, or restaurant app builder does.

However, there are two other important areas of research, and these are often overlooked in app design. This is mostly because the designers are purely technical and visual thinkers/doers, and they might not always consider the following two issues, but they are vital if you want your mobile app to succeed.

 ·        Analytics: during the development stage of the app, analytics must be kept in mind at all times. This means that the app builder constructs the app in such a way that function/features can be tracked and analysed by you, the owner of the app. You need to know how your customers interact with the app. You need to know which parts of the app are popular and might need developing, and which are unpopular and may need scrapping entirely.

If your retailer, ballet class, or restaurant app builder does not have the ability for you to analyse its interactions, then you will not be able to evaluate its true value. You won’t know if it’s worth keeping and developing (at significant costs) or if it’s entirely pointless.

Just like your website, analytics is crucial.

·         Target Market Research: next, the app must always be built with your customers in mind. And the only way to know how your customers want to use the app is to ask them. There is no point second guessing.

We have seen this repeatedly with products as widely variant as computer games and chicken soup. The creator thinks they know what their users want. They create the product and then they realise nobody wants to buy it. Why? Because they built it in their own unique vision, and did not consult the actual user.
