Travel & Tourism Industry's Contribution to the Economic Growth of India

by Richa Sharma content marketer

If you are looking at one of the domestic holiday packages, the options are endless. Tourism is a thriving sector in India, and has contributed greatly to the country’s overall development. Some of the most tourist friendly destinations include Goa, Kerala and Lakshadweep, and they bring in a lot of footfalls and thereby bolster the economy. Opt for one of the Goa tour packages or Kerala tour packages and you will see how tourism contributes to the local economy on your own. If you are looking at something that’s different, then one of the Port Blair packages may be interesting.

According to a report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), India will be one of the biggest economies in terms of tourism by 2028, adding ten million to the workforce. India occupies seventh place in terms of its travel and tourism sector contributing to the GDP. In 2017, travel and tourism formed 9.4 per cent of the country’s GDP. Also, the jobs that are travel based will increase to a little over 52 million in 2028, from the current 42.9 million this year. This speaks volumes about what travel and tourism can do to the employment sector.

Infusing new life into the local economy

  • Each time you or someone you know chooses one of the Goa tour packages, you are bolstering the local economy, and may indirectly contribute to newer jobs being added. Several hotels now hire locals for various roles and this improves the region’s economic growth. The announcement of special packages to certain areas of tourist interest, discounts during offseason, and even a recent move to turn it into a monsoon destination all contribute to the boom in tourism economy in Goa. Traditionally too, Goa has attracted tourists from within and outside India throughout the year. Its beaches, historical structures, cuisine and the general relaxed way of life have always been major draws.
