Sharing the road has been a challenge for many bikers and drivers from Provo, Utah to the East Coast. Safety has especially been a major concern for bikers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013 alone, 743 bikers were killed in an auto accident. As many an auto accident lawyer can attest, this is something that occurs far too often. Here are a few tips for bikers to stay safe on the road.

The Basics

A lawyer, doctor or biker could tell you that safety is extremely important while riding in traffic. Every accident is different, but there are some basic safety tips that have the potential to decrease the likeliness of being involved in a collision. Whether in the canyons near Provo or on a residential street, implementing basic safety precautions can make a difference.

Wearing the proper safety gear while biking may seem like a no-brainer, but many people still fail to protect themselves in this simple way. Wearing a helmet, reflective gear and lights (when necessary) can be very beneficial when it comes to on-the-road safety.

Traffic Lights

In Provo and other areas of the United States, it is required that bikers follow the same traffic laws as cars on the road. This includes stopping at stoplights and stop signs. Many auto accidents involving occur bikers occur at traffic stops. One of the most important things a biker can do to avoid being hit by a car while at a traffic light is to stay within the driver’s line of sight, or out of the driver’s blind spot. When a biker stops directly behind the car or to the side in front of the car, this accident can potentially be avoided.

Signaling

Signaling is not only important in auto safety but in bike safety as well. Oftentimes, drivers may feel that bikers’ moves are unpredictable and they may even use this to their defense when hiring a lawyer to support a claim regarding an accident.
