Top 6 List of Handy Travel Apps

by Ram Vaas Travel Blogger

Travel apps are the rage these days. Everybody wants the best deals and the best apps to plan their trip. From booking hotels to planning itineraries, apps are a lifesaver when it comes to travelling and having a good time.

1. Google Translate:  This is literally a life saver when it comes to travelling outside of your home country. Even in Sri Lanka, if you’re booked in multiple rooms in Kandy, or in budget hotels in Kataragama, you need to talk to the locals every now and then. With the Google Translate app you can read signs, talk with locals and experience your travel spot in any language they speak – Tamil, English, French, etc.

2. PackPoint: Repeatedly listed as “Editor’s choice” in the Google Play Store, this nifty app helps plan itineraries and things to pack according to the location and places you enter. It’s like having a thoughtful friend in your smartphone, who reminds you to pack and carry the essentials for the trip. It’s got some amazing features that allow travellers to become more strategic about their trips.

3. AccuWeather:  You don’t want to be lost in the rain, and the AccuWeather app is the best bet when it comes to being safe during your trip. It will give you weather alerts and warnings if something is about to happen. It even gives you a weekly weather report that allows you to change your plans if you see the weather changing.

4. Yoho Bed: Yoho Bed’s a pretty cool app that’s specialised in providing great branded hotels at unbeatable prices. It’s a great app for those travelling to Sri Lanka, and it provides a uniform experience for someone who’s looking for rooms in Colombo or budget hotels in Galle. It covers a wide range of areas under the banner and offers some unique features on the app as well.

5. Detour:  Ever wanted to have an impromptu tour of the city you’re currently in? Detour app lets you do just that. You can check out a whole host of features and tours through the app, and it lets you design your own customised tour of certain areas that you’d like to visit. You decide what you want to hear and when you want to hear it.

6. Uber:  Not only is Uber a great tool to get around town, but also it has some great hidden features that expand its full capabilities according to the trip you’re taking. If you’re in a large group then you can book an SUV, or if you’re travelling with a loved one you can book an Uber Mercedes Black.
