Three Tips to Removing the Home Carpet

by Kristen White Blogger
Carpet was once the most popular material to have in every room of the house, minus the kitchen and bathrooms. However, most homeowners prefer the flexibility and appearance of hardwood flooring which can look natural or be laid in a variety of patterns depending on the selection made at the showroom. Old carpets can be easily removed in a do-it-yourself project by following these simple steps.

Before getting started, have all the necessary tools and safety equipment ready so that you can move throughout the room and pull the carpet up without having to stop to get additional items. Work gloves and knee pads will ensure that the individual is protected from anything under the carpet that is sharp or sticky and can provide protection since the majority of the work is done from a kneeling position. If you have sensitivity to dust then a face mask is also a good idea to block the particles from being inhaled during the process. Tools include pliers and a utility knife with the potential to use a pry bar on the tack strip since that will need to come up as well.

After getting everything together, start in one corner of the room and use the pliers to pull the carpet away from the floor making sure that it is a wide strip and then use the utility knife to cut down lengthwise. It is important to cut the carpet in manageable strips that can be easily rolled and carried to wherever you are putting the discards. Repeat the process across the entire room until the carpet is completely gone and the tack strip remains. Since hardwood flooring installation will be completed by the professionals, it is best to provide as clean a ‘palette’ as possible to be used. The pry bar can be used to remove the strip and then placed in the trash pile with everything else.

Give yourself plenty of time to perform this process as it can be tedious and challenging depending on the age and condition of the carpet. Vacuum any residual dirt and dust after removal and touch up or replace the baseboards during this time before the flooring comes in. In addition to laying down the hardwood that was selected, the installation team will also attend to the skirting fitting which is the final piece that completes the look between the floor and the baseboards.

You can save money removing the carpet on your own but if this is not an option or you would rather let the experienced professionals handle everything, then work with the firm to find out if they do this type of removal and schedule the visit for everything to be done at once. Hardwood floors are ideal for every room and can be complemented with rugs to help minimize the noise and add accent colors to the interior décor. The final results should be a new floor that is exactly what you wanted on top of a solid foundation that will last for years to come.
