Things you should expect at an alcohol rehab center

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

Every individual has a different story on why they develop an addiction to alcohol. Addiction is a disease that one needs to support to overcome. Whether one decides to have themselves checked at an alcohol rehab in Los Angeles or not, knowing what to expect will help one ease the anxiety.

Know that you will be uncomfortable

A rehabilitation center is not supposed to make you comfortable. Especially when you go to your first group session. A rehab center is supposed to take you out of your comfort zone, change your environment, to change your habits and ultimately, to lose your addiction. There will be moments that you will question why you’re there and if you made the right choice. Know that you did. And the uneasy feeling of being there is perfectly normal. Remember your primary goal on why you’re there, and all the uncomfortable moments will be worth it.

You will feel the embarrassment for your addiction.

One of the hardest thing about addiction is the things you did because of them. Expect that you will feel embarrassed, and even angry for all the mistakes you did while under the influence. You are meant to feel those feelings. Some would even feel embarrassed for the fact that they are in rehab since some will see this as a sign of weakness. An indication that they were not able to combat the addiction on their own. You will feel a lot of different emotions while you’re in rehab, and embarrassment is one of them.

You will be challenged.

One of the responsibilities of the people surrounding you in the rehabilitation center is to challenge you. They will challenge you to get your life together. You either open up or shut yourself off when you feel the challenge. Either way, it is part of the process, and all you have to do is go through it.

You would want to give up.

Maybe even before you step into the rehab center, you would want to back out. Rehab life is not easy, but it will help you get your life back. There will be times would you would rather live with the addiction than be in that place. That is still part of the process, and not giving up would help you appreciate what you have already accomplished.

You will meet incredible people.

From the people who are going through the same thing as you to your mentors and counselor, you will meet a lot of incredible people with different backgrounds and stories. There is a lot of opportunities for creating friendships. These people know and understand what you’re going through as they have been where you are. There is a lot of room for lifting each other up.

Expect that something in you will change

The whole point of you being there is to change. The change is different from one individual to the next, but expect that there will always be change. You may look at yourself differently or you will look at the world differently.  Change is good. That’s what you’re there for.

At first, you might not want even to start, but when treatment is done, you would not be able to imagine yourself still being under the addiction. The first step is to begin. Start looking for alcohol rehab in Los Angeles. Start asking for referrals. Start with Pax House Recovery.
