Things to know about Podophyllotoxin

Podophyllotoxin, podofilox as known otherwise, is a cream which is medical in nature. It is used in the treatment of genital warts and molluscum contagiosum. The cream has its root from the root and stem of a plant which is called as podophyllum. Podophyllum is poisonous in nature if consumed directly. It is effective in several cases, people devour it in the conditions of jaundice, liver ailment, fever, hearing loss, and cancer, it is also used to counteract snakebite and to kill the parasite worms in intestine.

When it comes to medical use, it can be used as a cathartic, purgative, antiviral agent, antihelminthic, and vesicant. Moreover, podophyllotoxin is laying a foundation for anti-tumor agents like etoposide and teniposide. It can also be used in the treatment of the hairy leukoplakia.

It can have various side effects, hence, while applying the cream or using it the attention is supposed to be given. It is safe when it is applied in the limited concentration on the broken skin. However, it is supposed to be washed off within 4 to 6 hours. For the large areas on body, it is advised not to use in high concentration. If it is applied in high concentration, it would be absorbed through the skin and that would cause some serious problem.

In any condition it should not be consumed directly by mouth. Since, it has poisonous effects and can cause dizziness, vomiting, nausea, headache, spasms, fever, hallucination and visual lapses, kidney problems, liver problems, low blood pressure, problems in bone marrow, paralysis, and coma. The bigger thing which would make all of these things lethal is that the symptoms of the problems will appear after almost 13 hours.

The other side effects could be redness on the skin around the areas where it is applied. Tenderness, itchiness, pain, and superficial ulcer around the treated skin.

It is not to be used if the patient is pregnant. On records, it has been noticed that application of podophyllotoxin could be menacing for the lives of both, the mother and foetus. Birth defects are also seen in the reports. It is also needed to avoid when if you are breastfeeding. It should also not be applied on the wounds, as it can get inside of the skin which would have its own repercussions. Alcohol is one of the components used in the preparation of podophyllotoxin, hence, that makes it flammable. It is advised not to use it in the surroundings where there is fire or smoke, even the slightest.

Podophyllotoxin, like many medicines has a history and is used in several treatments as a medicine and cream. But it is also worthy of your attention, without your attention it can have severe effects which may lead to irreversible effects and can also harm people around you. Use it, but wisely and attentively.
