by Shruti Sharma Content CuratorIndia is a beautiful country with
some of the most breath-taking landscapes and a rich culture. The very sights
and sounds of India hold an attraction that cannot be easily ignored. It is no
wonder then that this colourful and vibrant country features on your bucket
list. If you are, however, travelling with a same sex partner or belong to the
LGBTQ community, you may want to keep some things in mind while planning your
travel. Indian cities and towns, smaller ones in particular, can be quite
conservative and you may want to put in a little more effort into finding LGBT
friendly resorts and travel assistance. These considerations will help
you stay safe and enjoy your vacation to the hilt.
Choose LGBT friendly
accommodation – There are a number of well-known and well-loved hotels
and resorts across the country which are friendly, safe, and inclusive. In fact,
luxury hotels such as The LaLiT pride themselves in their inclusivity. These
are excellent properties to choose from when you look for accommodation in
India.
Avoid PDA
LGBT or not public displays of
affection are frowned upon in the country. When traveling in India it is vest
to dress conservatively and avoid kissing, hugging, and handholding when out in
public. These gestures are often considered disrespectful at least in public.
While metro cities tend to be more liberal than smaller towns, it is best to
remain aware of your surroundings.
Avoid indulging in debates
While homosexual relationships
have been decriminalized in the country the social political and religious
sentiments still do not favour open discussions and debates regarding the
matter. It is best not to indulge in any such debates in public places. In
India people can be quite curious without meaning to be intrusive. It is best
to avoid discuss your sexual preferences and relationship status with tourist
guides, cab drivers, or other people you may know casually.
LGBT helpline
India receives a very large
number of tourists each year. The hospitality services in the country are
highly developed and the people are warm and friendly. The country also has a
number of NGOs and organisations that fight for LGBT rights. It is best to reach out and get in touch with
these organisations such as Gay Info Centre, Humsafar Trust, and Gay Bombay
while you plan your travel. These groups provide great help for LGBTQ
travellers in the country.
Don't forget to enjoy yourself
All said and done, major cities
like Delhi and Mumbai have a number of gay clubs, pubs, and cafes which are
wonderful places to meet and mingle with the local LGBT community. Kitty Su and
Chez Jerome – Q Café in Delhi and Cafe Zoe and Doolally Taproom in Mumbai.
