Regardless of the task at hand, goal setting is imperative for the development of the individual. Simply put, when something is to be achieved and accountability isn’t present, improvement is greatly hindered. Truthfully, without goals, life becomes an aimless pastime with little to no direction.

As previously mentioned, while goals play an important role in nearly all of life’s activities, few of them place as much emphasis on goal setting as do the worlds of addiction recovery and drug rehab. Why are goals so important for addicts seeking to regain control of their respective lives? Well, the reasons are many; however, that being said, the following two are arguably the most prominent:

1) Personal Responsibility

Not only does goal setting provide an end destination for addicts hoping to live life as they’d once happily done, but it creates an increase in individual responsibility. For example, once goals, after having been formally written down and shared with others who will most assuredly check back to measure progress, are formed, it’s substantially easier to  develop a realistic plan of action.

For addicts in rehab, this kind of strength is of the utmost importance, seeing as how setbacks are, more than likely, going to arise, from time to time.

2) Measurable Motivation

Motivation is an important factor in overcoming difficult obstacles. For drug addicts, intrinsic motivation, when both discovered and harnessed for change, brings about long-lasting results, seeing as how the benefits of sobriety are finally internalized.

Speaking more of goal setting’s ability to motivate, says AlcoholRehab.com, “Motivation is highly influenced by the individual’s self-efficacy. This is their belief in their own ability to achieve something. Self-efficacy can be increased by experiences of success, good role models or verbal persuasion.”

Whatever the situation may be, a happy lifestyle can be found, once again. With that in mind, if such a scenario is to occur, proper goals will need to be put into place to push, inspire and bring about change in the life of an addict, both inside and outside of drug rehab.
