The Ultimate Guide to Kosher Food

by Mazza More Famous Catering Company
They say you are what you eat. When it comes to food, kosher might sound equally familiar and foreign to you. Kosher food is widely known as the permissible food products that are considered fit for consumption by the Jewish law. It is derived from the Hebrew word “Kashrus” that means pure and is therefore suitable for eating. The rules mention a list of food items that are fit for consumption and others that are forbidden. Here is a brief guide to kosher food- what is acceptable and what is beyond the pale:

What is kosher food? Kosher food is the food that is prepared according to the Jewish law. The standards for preparing this food is described in the Torah and the rules comply with the comprehensive Jewish dietary laws. Here are some of the set standards that govern the preparation of Kosher food:

•    Meat and dairy products should be separated and cannot be cooked or eaten together.

•    The kitchen should have separate set of utensils for the preparation and consumption of both the items. The cooking area for the two should also be separate.

•    Moreover, you cannot serve dairy and meat products on the same table.

•    You should make sure that there is an interval of at least one to three hours between consuming dairy and meat products.

•    Animals whose meat and milk is permissible under the Kosher law are cows, sheep and goat. Poultry includes chicken, duck, turkey, geese and pigeon.

•    Only those animals come under the Kosher law that have fully split hooves and chew the cud. The animals should be slaughtered strictly according to the laws mentioned in the Torah, one of which states that the animal should be slaughtered as instantaneously as possible.

•    After the animal is slaughtered it should be ensured that the blood and prohibited fats and veins are removed.

•    Dairy products obtained from the above mentioned animals are only permitted and they should not contain any additives or non-kosher elements.

•    Only those fish that has fins and scales can be consumed and there is a strict no to eating crabs and lobsters.

•    The consumption of insects is strictly prohibited, therefore fruits and vegetables that might have been infested are not allowed.

•    Sweets and chocolates can be consumed only if they are Kosher certified.

•    Although alcohol is permitted, drinks that are prepared from grapes, like wine are not permitted.
