The two terms diamond and brilliant are often used for each other and confused for each other. It is important not to do so. The Diamond is a material while the Brilliant is a type of size. The profile of the round brilliant cut diamond is composed of a top, crown, finished by a flat surface. The lower part is called the cylinder head. The diameter, or circumference of the gloss, is the girdle. In total, the round brilliant cut diamond size thus comprises 57 or 58 facets according to whether we consider the culet as a facet or not.

During the pruning of any precious stone, the preoccupation is multiple: make a stone as important as possible, as pure as possible, as elegant as possible. The diamond seller is always looking for the best compromise between these requirements. The round brilliant cut diamond whose facets respect symmetry and oppose to make "Brilliant" the diamond appeared from the end of the XVIIth century. However, the modern round brilliant cut diamond is generally attributed to Marcel Tolkowsky (1899-1991), a Belgian mathematician and diamond maker who published a book called "Diamond Design" in 1919, in which, on the basis of mathematical calculations, he established the proportions to be given to a round diamond to optimize the brilliance and the lights.

It is no surprise that after all these years; the round brilliant cut diamond is still a favourite for couples. It defines elegance and has a history but to top it all its shine is a sure eye catcher!
