The Signs of a Great Nursing Home
by Kevin Smith AuthorThe
decision to put your loved in a rest home is a grueling one. No matter if it’s
your spouse, a parent, or a grandparent, you want nothing but the best for your
relative. For that reason, you’ve spent countless hours researching various
facilities and combing over your finances to determine exactly what you can
afford. While the price of a certain nursing facility in Augusta, KS, can give
you clues as to whether or not they provide adequate and compassionate care for
their residents, there are a few other tell-tale signs that you should look
for.
The Staff
The
biggest indication of a well-run rehabilitation and nursing center is the staff
on hand. If the staff to patient ratio is too low, it’s doubtful that the
residents are getting the care that they need. Look for a facility that is
fully staffed with competent and kind individuals. There should be low turnover
and each person you encounter should provide excellent service. Also, pay
attention to how long the Director of Nursing or Executive Director has held
their position. If they’ve been with the facility for longer than 3 years, it’s
a good indication that things are running smoothly and that the staff enjoy
their jobs.
Current Patients
If
possible, speak to the current patients or the families of the current patients
at the rehabilitation center you’re considering. They can give you their honest
opinions and attest to the care that their loved ones are receiving. Ask about
infection rates and observe the interactions between the staff and patients.
Warm greetings and spontaneous interactions are a great sign that the staff
cares about each person residing in the facility.
Healthy Food
A
well-run nursing home doesn’t skimp on the food. Instead, they place a special
emphasis on the dietary needs of the residents. For that reason, each meal is
delicious, healthy, and catered to the restrictions and allergies of specific
patients. Very little should be pre-packaged. Instead, a qualified and trained
chef should oversee the menu planning, preparation, and serving each day.
Family Outreach
A
great nursing home and rehabilitation center understands the importance of
family in the lives of each patient. Because of this, they have family counsel
groups and classes in place to help members cope with any feelings they might
be having. Training, education, and information should be readily available to
families, as well as any necessary support.
Don’t
settle for a nursing facility in Augusta, KS, that’s
anything less than the best. By using these tips, you can spot the great
centers from those that are subpar, giving your loved one a comfortable place
to convalesce.
