The Significance of The Month of Muharram - What did Hazrat Hussain?

Also known as Muharram-ul-Haram, it is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year. As a matter of fact, it’s the only month with which Allah’s name has been attached to. Consequently, the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) also referred Moharram as ‘the Sacred Month of Allah’. Moharram is also one of the four sacred months of the Islamic calendar and its significance is indicated by its name. The word ‘Muharram’ literally translates to the meaning ‘forbidden’ i.e., it’s such a sacred month that certain actions become forbidden during it, as they might violate its sanctity. 

Another interesting fact to know about this month is that both the month of the Muharram and Allah’s House Al-Masjid Al-Haram derive their names from the same Arabic root word. 

The virtue of Observing Fasts during Muharram.

In addition to the month of Ramadan, observing fasts during Muharram is also advised in Islam. Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) narrated in a hadith regarding the importance of fasting in Muharram; (description) The best of fasting after the month of Ramadan is fasting during Allah's month i.e., Muharram.
In fact, the sanctity of fasting in Muharram was so established that even the people of Quraysh in the days of ‘Jahiliya’ (ignorance) used to fast on certain days during this month. One such day is also known as the Day of Ashura i.e., the 10th of Muharram.
Ashura.
Our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) said about fasting on Ashura in a Hadith; (description) fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the minor sins of the past year for a believer.
Therefore, it’s advised for Muslims to fast on the ninth day in addition to the tenth day of Muharram.

Importance of Day of Ashura.

1. On the Day of Ashura, the grandson of our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW), Hazrat Hussain-Ibn-Ali (RA) was killed in the Battle of Karbala. That’s why the day is of great sorrow for the whole of the Muslim community living across the globe.
2. Ashura also marks the day when Hazrat Musa (AS) was saved from the Pharaoh of Egypt by Allah Almighty.
3. The Day of Ashura is also a symbol of struggle made against injustice and oppression.
Umrah in Muharram.
Performing the minor pilgrimage in the holy month of Muharram is also advised. For which thousands of Muslims opt for it. Not only it is religiously more rewarding but also one of the best times for umrah performance. Marking the end of Hajj time, it’s a less crowded time for umrah performance and also the hotels, flights, as well as umrah packages, are quite discounted.
