The Rise of Smartphones Bringing us Back to the Simplicity of a Card

With most web searches taking place on a mobile device, mobile responsive websites are becoming essential for businesses. Google’s latest algorithm is actually dropping any website down the SEO ranking that is not mobile responsive.
Website design is now shifting new content into what is known as cards. Cards are small rectangles that include images, text and links which have become the trendiest way to share information.
Cards are not just a fun new way to share content. These little boxes organize information into a sleek and useful package that can be shared clearly, as a single thought. Pinterest was the leader in this style using an enviable photograph, a small caption and then a clickable link that directs the reader to the site where the picture was found.
Card-based design creates a grid system that is easy for readers to navigate. This website design guides the reader’s eye down the page and keeps them scrolling. This method also shows the reader how the information goes from most relevant to their search to less important information.
Images are the best way to portray to information to viewers. Card-based design is heavily reliant on the use of images. Typically, the image is the largest part of the card and the caption and link are below, creating a more attractive visual.
Most importantly, card-based website design is suitable for mobile devices. As stated previously, most searches online are made from a mobile device. Before cards, a website would have to shrink from many columns to one single column to fit the screen of a smartphone.
Now, websites like Google Maps are using cards to enhance their search-ability. The map and image of the location being searched is listed at the top with the description, reviews and link to their website below.
It appears as though cards are not just a tech phase. It has been proven that readers are more responsive to this design and that it’s much easier to follow along and share. This design provides fluidity and frames information from most important to least relevant. The simplicity of cards is reframing the way websites are designed.
