The Origin of Cydia

In the modern world there are a few companies that are the pillars of the proverbial communication society. The decisions and products that these companies launch, affect a huge chunk of the global population in many weird ways. Apple is one of those companies. It has managed to make a mark for itself in the world through sheer ingenuity and innovation.

Before the arrival of Apple there were a few companies that were making similar products. However the quality of consumer experience was largely low. Apple changed all of that; not only were its products technically superior but they also had an edge over everything else in the market at the time because of the attention to detail and aesthetics. All Apple products are much lauded for their design element as much as for their smooth functioning.

Apple took its propensity for perfection too far however when they decided that they needed to control even the minutest detail of the consumer experience they were providing. It became about having control over things rather than providing a customer experience. So even after iPhones released, people couldn't connect it to the network of their choice. They had to stick to the network with which Apple had worked out a deal.

Apple products also have a different niche about them; they cannot be opened. The hardware on the phone is such that it takes special screw drivers to open up the phone. We all love an experience that is specifically tailored for us but we feel stifled whenever it is too tailored. Also Apple products release in phases all over the world and sometimes certain places have to wait for a long time before the product reaches their shore.

This gave rise to a growing number of people who longed to get their hands on the product in time with the rest of the world. That was easy. All one had to do was contact someone who was visiting a foreign country where it had already been launched. But then they couldn’t connect to the network in their country because Apple hadn’t granted them authorization.

This is where the brainwaves of a certain Jay Freeman kicked in and he went about developing Cydia. Cydia is software that lets you play around with your Apple phone in ways that were previously impossible. It lets you download software packages and apps that improve the functionality of your phone in many different ways. The best part about Cydia is that all of the apps and software packages that are available on the Apple store are available for free!

All one needs to do is make sure that their Apple product is jail broken. After the process is complete, you can download Cydia on your jail broken device. The reason behind the naming of Cydia is also quite interesting especially if you’re a nerd. Cydia was named after the Codling Moth. The scientific name for it is Cydia. It was used because that is the proverbial worm in the apple.
