Puppies are somewhat like babies. They’re adorable and lovable – until they become needy and misbehave. The fact is, many families in Utah adopt a puppy, failing to realize that their little fur baby needs proper training to be a functional and happy member of the family. Dog owners have the ability – and responsibility – to effectively control and train their dog to be friendly and well-mannered.

A dog bite constitutes one of the most common, frustrating complaints among new puppy owners. When training a puppy not to bite, many owners tend to commit training sins out of pure frustration and impatience. What Utah dog owners have to realize is that behavioral training is a lengthy process that requires consistency and patience. Otherwise, a dog’s socialization and behavioral skills will go down the drain.

Inconsistency Makes for a Confused Puppy

A puppy’s primary development period is between three and 12 weeks of age, which is when a puppy depends most on its environmental influences for continued development, says Pet place. Consistency is key during this period. For example, if dog bites are the main issue, but Spot gets away with biting three times out of 10, that’s inconsistent and he will have a hard time learning not to bite.

Set the rules and stick to them. Believe it or not, dogs can tell when their owners aren’t being consistent. Utah families need to find a method that works for them and use that method only. Also, being patient one day and impatient the next only makes for a confused puppy, unable to predict how its owner will react.

Isolated Pups are Socially Awkward Pups

Fact: dogs love to play with other dogs and people. For adequate socialization training, a new puppy needs to be exposed to the outside world. When a stubborn puppy doesn’t know how to be friendly with other dogs, he becomes socially awkward. This awkwardness can turn sour at any given moment, as the dog might bite other dogs or humans.

Puppy training isn’t something to be feared. While it may test an owner’s patience and confidence, it’s important to have a well-behaved puppy. Avoid common training sins; stay confident and make sure your new puppy learns to socialize.
