The tribes of India have been known for their creativity, and their skill has surpassed regional and even national boundaries creating admirers from all over the world. The Dhokra tribe has showcased their artistry throughout India, and people have been enamored by the works they have produced, a trained eye can detect the signature design visible in their sculptures. A Shilpkaar uses their fertile imagination and blends it with concrete materials to give it a proper form. Their crafts have a certain feature that is deemed antique by the onlookers, these are 100% handcrafted and the rustic hue reflected in their sculptures exudes an appealing charm, the Dhokra incorporate the lost wax technique along with bell and scrap metal to produce their works. Their products like the brass lady sitting with base – Dhokra art is available at Tribes India.
The making of sculptures
Shilpkaari involves several procedures, hollow or solid casting is preferred, modeling is done in beeswax and molding of the product is achieved via the use of clay, after drying, it goes through a process of de-waxing, further, the melted metal is introduced to it, this helps to achieve the form the sculptor had intended to make, and eventually the liquid metal dries up, following this the clay is broken and the finished product is given a golden paint or black finish, the Dhokras are known for their signature design of slim legs hands and figures in their works. Some of their works such as musician todi handcrafted in Dhokra are available on the website of Tribes India.
The eastern region has been producing remarkable works that have been praised by different corners of the country; Sculpting is done in various ways, some Dhokras have experimented with carvings out of stone, they used to rub the rock with certain metals for days, and the exceptionally time-consuming aspect of this activity has resulted in a bit of decline, the skilled artisans are also very less in number with meager amount of earnings every day has somehow restricted their production, others have played with assembling the different parts and making an effigy, these art forms have been received with a good amount of recognition but not enough to become the sole livelihood.
Subjects and themes
The Dhokras used themes such as rituals and mythology but they have expanded their subject range and today the themes include everyday life in village and wildlife, they also make utility objects like hairstyling combs and teacups along with eating plates and bowls. The Dhokran jewelry has been trending wide. Some of these pieces such as 5 line Dokra bead necklace are available at Tribes India.
