The increasing demand for turnstile gates in the UAE.

Over the last decades, there has been a higher demand for turnstile gates in UAE and other pedestrian entrance control devices (PECs). If such products are part of your short or long term security plan, you may have wondered where to find some quick training on turnstile system design.

What is the reason behind the recent surge in turnstile demand? Some of the reasons are the aging post-9/11 turnstile systems (15+ years), issues over violence and terrorism, and tenants’ expectation of secure entrances in property management buildings.

Turnstiles and PECs

The main job of Turnstiles gates in UAE is to control who is getting in. They are a hardware device fixed with your access control system, which helps ensure only one passage per authorized person. Most times the access control integration is via dry contacts but some systems allow for software-level integration. Turnstiles ensure that the lobby staff/security team more effective and efficient.

Usually any secure building or campus having a minimum of 500 approved occupants, and where every credential (access card or biometric) is presently checked by an access control reader and/or monitored by an officer or lobby staff person, is an excellent prospect for automated PEC. A secure facility has an interest in controlling access to authorized persons, and manpower is currently employed to that end.

Some of the most general types of turnstiles are mechanical tripod waist high turnstiles, full height turnstiles, pure optical and barrier type optical turnstiles, security portals (mantraps), and security revolving doors. Speedlanes or Smartlanes are the next-generation optical turnstiles and may include swinging or retracting (sliding) glass or other physical barriers to further discourage unauthorized access attempts. Advantages are greater security, and less monitoring.

Industries and Applications

Some of the more common applications are in healthcare, transportation, educational, entertainment, pharmaceutical, financial and energy company corporate offices, large downtown property management buildings, headquarters and administrative offices of practically every type of company. Some of the common factors across these applications are regulatory environment, storage of sensitive customer data, threats of domestic or workplace violence or terrorism, close proximity or sharing of secure space with public space as in a busy multi-use downtown office building.

While primarily used for crowd control, a turnstile gate can be used for a variety of other purposes:

·         Restricting pedestrian access into a venue

·         To create fare gates (entry via paid access)

·         Increased security

·         Monitoring of numbers of people entering or leaving a venue

·         Preventing access or exit in emergency situations

Turnstiles may be more beneficial to your business if they are integrated with other security systems such as CCTV, intercoms and barriers, access controls like RFID reader, finger print, and biometrics. There are various types of turnstiles which are best suited to different purposes, such as crowd control, controlled admission into a venue or to provide security.

 Swing Gate - These can be used for either single direction or multi directional access, which allows both entrance and exit through the same gate. Swing Gates are not as secure as other designs but they can still be used to successfully restrict entry to areas. They can feature manual or automatic controls.

Drop Arm - These turnstile gates in UAE have three arms, which spin as the user enters. They are normally operated using a coin, ticket or card. They can also be activated remotely using push button release. The major issue with this type of barrier is that it is relatively easy for people to jump over them.

Full Height Turnstiles - These turnstile act like a revolving door and reach a height of around 2 metres. This height makes it impossible for someone to jump over the barrier, making it popular in football stadia and other sporting arenas around the globe. Operated using a number of methods such as, card reader, via a scanner or manually, these gates offer the best secure entry system.
