The Ganga Rulers of Orissa

Ganga Dynasty is a name utilized for two related administrations who ruled parts of India:

The Western Ganga Dynasty, a kingdom in southern India, situated in southern Karnataka, from the third to the eleventh hundreds of years

The Eastern Ganga Dynasty, leaders of Odisha from the eleventh to the fifteenth hundreds of years. The state of Odisha owes much of its rich architectural heritage to this one dynasty. Kalinga was the ancient name of this state,. It is the same kingdom whose invasion in the ancient period of Indian history transformed the Emperor Ashoka.

The Eastern Ganga, or as it was then called, Chodaganga dynasty was a medieval Indian dynasty that ruled Kalinga from 11th to mid 15th century AD. Their lead comprised of the entire of the current Indian territory of Odisha and additionally parts of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The early leaders of the administration ruled from Dantapura; the capital was later moved to Kalinganagara (present day Mukhalingam), and at last to Kataka (present day Cuttack). Today, they are mostly recognized as the builders of the famous Konark Sun Temple, an UNESCO World Heritage site at Konark, Odisha.

The Eastern Ganga rulers were related with the Chola and Eastern Chalukyas from their mother’s side.
