Acne is a very common skin problem but it tends to become more prominent and problematic when it leaves acne scars on your face. These are the unpleasant remains of the acne lesions which cause damage to the skin’s collagen layer. This results in a depressed or a raised skin portion that affects the beauty of otherwise healthy skin.

One of the effective ways to get rid of these ugly acne scars is having a chemical peeling skin treatment which removes the scarred skin cells and allows the appearance of healthy skin cells. There are various types of chemical skin peels that work in their own way in treating acne scars. The choice of the skin peel is made according to the extent of the damage to the skin caused by the acne scars.

·         Glycolic acid peel

It is superficial skin peeling treatment that doesn’t penetrate deeper beyond the epidermal layer of skin. The glycolic acid is extracted from sugar cane. The molecules of glycolic acid reach into the outer layer of skin through the skin pores and remove the layer of dead skin cells accumulated on the surface. This improves the appearance of skin and unveils clear smooth skin underneath. However, this peeling skin treatment is capable of removing only minor superficial acne scarring as well as some redness associated with it. The peel has no downtime and recovery period may be few days.

·         Trichloracetic acid (TCA)

It is a medium depth skin peel that penetrates through the epidermis and reaches the dermis however it’s not as deep as deeper skin peels. The TCA peel helps to treat numerous skin issues including pigmentation, dark spots, sun damage, fine lines and blemishes. It is also effective in treating acne scars especially for people with darker skin tone because it is less likely to have cause a side effect of pigmentation irregularities as in the case of deep skin peels. It has little to no downtime and the recovery period of this peel is few days to a week.

·         Phenol peel

This is a deep peeling skin treatment which should be performed under the proper supervision of a practitioner or a cosmetic practitioner. This peel penetrates deeper through the epidermis and the dermis into the deeper skin layers. The treatment may take anywhere between 1-2 hours to apply. This type of peeling skin treatment is highly effective in treating severe sun damaged skin, deep wrinkles and lines and atrophic acne scarring which is pitted into the skin. These peels are medical grade peels and cause damage to the deeper skin layers therefore they should be administered by experienced and expert doctor. The side effects and complications should be discussed before application of peel which includes discolouration and skin infections.

The skin peeling treatment reveals fresh, smooth, scar free and rejuvenated skin underneath which is highly sensitive to sun rays so a good broad spectrum sun screen is a must after having skin peel treatment.
