The 7 Stages of Digital Product Development

by Marta Jordan Writer
Whether you are building the next unicorn or are an established business solving a problem a possible approach might be found in digital product development services or digital transformation solutions.

In this piece, let’s discuss user-centered digital product development and the 7 key stages.

Analysis, Research & Preparation

It always starts here. A solution-focused approach to problem-solving that is based on Design Thinking will get you off to a good start.

Do market research to help define the problem statement – that is faced by your audience. It’s also a good time to confirm if it’s a problem they want resolved, and are willing to pay to fix it.
Brainstorm solutions and ideas.

Consider an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), which can be your first release, targeting key elements of the solution to the problem statement. A phased enhancement plan can then be focused on, while you build a customer base for the product.

Sketching & Wireframing

You have the problem statement and the concept for the product to fix it. Wireframes help define the solution in greater detail. They help define the vision for the product.

Design

How will your digital product look? How will users interact with it? What are the user journeys?

Clickable prototypes are incredibly powerful at this stage, to start bringing your digital product to live.

Prototyping

Prototypes can have basic designs and absolutely and only the bare minimum features. These also aren’t  fully integrated into the rest of your architecture.

A prototype is a great point to begin running tests with your team and your target audience and seeking feedback and refinement opportunity.

Agile Implementation

This is where the coding really starts! An agile approach supports iterative product development and significantly increases development productivity, offers greater control and will result in a better quality end product.

Launch

This is the moment you have been building up to. You are ready to unveil your digital product to the masses. Marketing and communication plans start to fire up here.

Maintenance, Support, Enhancements

A good product is never 100% finished. It can be improved upon, have new features added and refinements made to keep it relevant. Maintenance and support are also critical to ensuring your product is stable, securer and desirable.

There’s no denying that digital products play a significant role in our lives these days. We use them every day. As trends like remote workforces and the touchless economy continue well past the thick of the pandemic, companies have two choices: keep up in the digital realm or concede market share to competitors that are innovating and ideating.
