The 5 Major Mistakes for Constructing Wine Cellar

by Isabel Blamey Professional writer
While enjoying a glass of wine, the wine lovers have the same point and same thought. So, who would not want a room of fine bottles? Building cellar in your house is a fabulous idea. If you don’t take the time to plan before buying the cellar, the problem may come when you jump in it. I have asked a few wine experts and find out five most frequent mistakes to avoid as you put up your collection.

1.  Wrong location:

It is so simple to choose the spot to build your wine cellar, right? Wrong! The success of wine’s taste is the right placement of your collection when you are planning for wine cellar construction. Before you have opened the cork, the wine may spoil. And, this way you will lose hundreds by selecting the wrong spot. It should be the cool, dark location below ground without any access to light.

Keeping it dark is ideal but it is OK to have lights in the cellar for when it is in use. The wine, especially white wines can be degraded by the direct sunlight. The door should be a seal every time. People most often underestimate the importance of where the wine cellar should be situated.

2.  Ignoring humidity levels and proper cooling:

Why you should worry about the temperature fluctuations? The wine expands and then pushes and pulls on the cork when the cellar gets cold and hot. Ideally, 55 degrees Fahrenheit is best but 60 or 65 degrees is fine. To keep the humidity level and temperature right, it is vital to choose the right location for contemporary wine cellars. Along with this, wine should have the right cooling system and insulation.

The cellar needs humidity of 55 to 75 percent. This gives the bottles the best seal possible by expanding the corks like a set sponge. The tight seal saves the wines from spoiling and keeps excess oxygen out of the bottle. The cellar maintains the proper humidity levels. If the floor is not concrete, don’t forget to insulate the floor.

3.  Keeping up the bottles in the wrong position:

The wine will usually undrinkable if you position the bottles wrongly. The corks will dry up if the wine is in no contact with the cool as this helps the cork to moist. All the bottles should be kept horizontally.

4.  Organization of the bottles improperly:

When you have fancy stuff in your collection, you need to reserve this for special occasions. Along with this, you have a good collection of everyday wines. For that, you need to plan the wine cellar construction in a way that is suitable for organizing the special bottles and one area for keeping everyday wines. You can use an app to track the cellar of wines as per their place, era, and name. And if you have a huge collection?  I am letting you know what to do. In such a condition, the expert can help you to organize it better.

5.  Weak structure of the place:

Before you start building the cellar, be honest with yourself about space’s structure. Sure, you will waste money on building the cellar and the cellar will not fit in the space, especially if you have a huge collection. The collectors who have more than 500 bottles are the people who need a large cellar.

Bottom Line:

The other things you should take care of our various technical aspects, adequate ventilation and airflow, appropriate flooring, and friendly lighting etc. In the planning stage get professional advice on your wine cellar. This is the solution to the above issues.  You will have the dream cellar you have always wanted if you engage a professional early in the project.
