The talk about sustainable development has been going on ever since the mankind found out about what was happening to the planet. With rising temperatures, increasing heat-waves and rising sea levels, the humans are now assured that global warming is real.

We’ve all been asked many times “Don’t you want to leave a better planet for your grandchildren?” to which we have collectively replied, “Nah, screw them!”

It might sound funny but the actual fact is that the need for sustainable development is direr than ever. And the basic step is to start teaching the coming generation about the importance of recycling. The children of today need to know how important recycling is given their future. With so much of solid wastes being dumped into the oceans and soil, we need to take bold measures now.

We can teach the children about recycling through many fun activities because it might not be the best idea to explain all the scientific analogies to them about why we need to recycle.

There are a lot of fun filled activities through which we can teach the children about how they can recycle waste materials. Through the means of art and craft we can create a lot of creative stuff that can be actually useful and even eye-appealing. With the help of these activities, children can develop a love for their environment.

  • Just by using some cardboard, scrap papers and basic stationery, one can make useful things like pencil holders, wind chimes, bird feeders etc. Using waste paper and colour glazed paper, you can create confetti for decoration. These activities are very fun to conduct and help you build an understanding with your children.
  • The rainy season can prove to be a bliss as you can go out with your children and collect rainwater for using it in your household activities.
  • You can take them out to a local park for a weekly cleanup and collect recyclable items.
  • Every once a month conduct family sessions where you can discuss the benefits of recycling. Tell your children why we need to conserve our natural resources and how our water resources are depleting. This will inspire them toward the cause and make them realize the importance of saving our nature.
  • You can create a list of “Recyclable item of the month” and keep adding unused household items that you were going to throw away anyway. You can also sell scrap online if it’s not easily recyclable at home.

Give them a proper introduction to the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If they know these basics right from their childhood, they can make recycling a habit. It helps them in becoming an aware citizen of the world. This can be incorporated into fun games. You can hold a recycling race with your family and whoever gets the most number of items wins a prize.

Such interactive games and activities can leave a deep impact on your kids’ minds. It’s not just about the games but about the values you are teaching them. It is like a seed you sow and then nurture it to get a healthy tree.

At the same time you should also teach them the skill of scrapping. Some items just cannot be recycled at homes which is why you have to sell it to willing scrap buyers who send it forward to the processing plants where they can be recycled.

We keep saying how we need to make a difference in the world but this is what really needs to be done. The coming generations need to be aware of current circumstances so that they don’t make the same mistakes as us.

So, it’s high time we sit our children down and make them realize what’s happening to the world and what steps we need to take to counter these problems. After all, this planet is theirs as much as it is ours.

The children of this generation need to learn the value of recycling and its contributions towards the environment. We can teach this to the children through some fun and interactive activities. These activities will not only help them to become creative but also give them a sense of awareness.
