Symptoms and Diseases Caused By Mosquito and Ticks Bites in Dogs

by Larry Chetan Business

Its summer and everybody wants to enjoy the weather. Apart from humans, even our pets need to have a feel of good weather. Unfortunately, ticks and mosquitoes are also here waiting to suck blood. So what are the signs and diseases to look out for dogs that have been bitten by ticks and mosquitoes?

Symptoms of tick bites in dogs and the diseases

There are many symptoms to look out for dogs that have been bitten by ticks. The most common ones are blood loss, anemia and skin infections. However, there are some serious diseases which include;

  • Lyme diseases – this is caused by bacteria. At first, the dog shows signs of joint pain but you may notice that it is not active. In case it starts limping then the probability is that it has Lyme disease. Loss of appetite and fever csan also be present in some cases.

  • Tick Paralysis- this is not common but it cannot be ruled out. Tick paralysis is caused by neurotoxin which is found in the salivary glands of the ticks. The female ticks are the carriers and once they bite the dog, the disease spreads through the bloodstream. This affects the respiratory systems of the dogs causing respiratory arrest. To avoid the spread of ticks, tick control Duxbury is available to help you out.

Symptoms of mosquito bites and the diseases

Just like humans, mosquito bites in dogs have similar effects. Rubbing ears, constant scratching, vomiting, scratching the nose against the walls, weight loss etc. The diseases include;

  • Heartworm- once the dog is infected with heartworm, it takes more than seven months until the worm reaches maturity. After they mature, the parasites make their way to the lungs and start multiplying in the lungs and damage the surrounding veins. Though this is a rare case, it is good to control such occurrences. Mosquito control Duxbury has taken full control of mosquitoes to decrease the cases of heartworm in dogs.

  • West Nile Virus – this is a viral disease and affects mostly the young and old dogs. The mosquitoes contract this disease from birds. They transmit the disease to the dogs through biting. The affected dogs develop neurological problems, convulsions, circling and they lose appetite.

  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus – this is also known as sleeping sickness. It is hard to diagnose it unless you are very keen. It infects the dogs through a bite and mostly the mosquitoes get it from birds. The signs are fever and diarrhea but in its advanced stages, the dogs get eye problems.

We can protect our dogs from these diseases if we take extra caution.
