The Cruise of the Midge is a novel based on life of a brave Englishman on a frigate called Midge. His job was to make sea route safe from slave-ships and pirates that attack passenger and cargo ships to loot and plunder. The protagonist was shown fighting slavers and Spaniards. He is always available to help and he provides real help even in difficult times like storms.

 


The story starts from the frigate leaving for the West-Indian waters where there are many pirate ships waiting for passenger and cargo carriers to come. Since it is a frigate, it is prepared for fighting and life on a frigate is always at danger. But the brave protagonist is a great escapist. He comes safely out of every danger. It is a long story of bravery, courage and intelligence.

 

According to critics, the story fails to mesmerize the readers but they appreciate the way sea-life was described by the author. A vivid description of sea-life takes the reader to the battle ground that is the sea. The view presented by the writer creates the scene in which the protagonist was living. The Cruise of the Midge still makes a good read.
