Storage Shelves for the Basement
by Lisa Header WriterMost people would take full advantage of their basement and turn it into the perfect storage area, especially when they need to store items in relatively moderate and controlled temperature. Problem is that after a while, sometimes sooner, the basement is filled to the brim and its storage capacity is depleted. Arranging and rearranging items, boxes, furniture and all that’s in there will only get you so far. One of the better ways to optimise basement storage and open up some free space is to construct and install storage shelves.
Using the walls to store items is likely to reduce the clutter and mess by half so give it some serious thought. Constructing and fitting wall mounted shelves in the basement will involve some cutting, measuring and a good dose of handyman skills, and if you don’t feel up to the task, you should contact a number of professionally qualified builders in London and shop around for the best price. If you want to find experienced and reliable builders London industry guides will put you in touch with able, knowledgeable contractors who will provide you with a custom tailored, affordable solution (my personal favourite is Fantastic Builders).
- Step one of the project is taking measurements and dimensions, take your time with measuring and be sure to get it right, as miscalculation now will roll you back to square one later on.
- When you have the measurements taken down, choose the right type of wood for your shelving. You will need sturdy timber that will be able to support its own weight and the weight of the items you want to store there.
- Cut the wood in accordance to your particular shelving design, the most common option is a basic frame with vertical supports running the height of the shelving.
- When assembling the shelves, start at the bottom by adding shelving pieces to the vertical supports, you can use screws instead of nails. Don’t try and attach all the panels or shelves all at once as this will be awkward to move around and fit into place.
- It is recommended to brace corners, where the supports meat the shelves, using metal brackets - this will give the shelving extra strength and more storage capacity. Don’t forget that for extra strength and support the shelves will have to be attached to the ceiling too, this can be done in a number of ways, if necessary consult with professionals.
