Diamonds are frequently cut so light illuminates the jewel before returning to the eye of the viewer. These stones are typically brilliant cuts, or emulate brilliant styles. Step cut diamonds take another approach, showcasing the interior of the crystal. They may be a good choice for those who want something different for their rings.

Emerald cuts are among the best-known step cut jewels. They get their name from the green gemstone, whose fragility requires careful faceting. The cut consists of a rectangular shape with cropped corners, a large top facet, and parallel concentric along the rest of the stone. This reduces the risk of accidental chipping while drawing attention to the stone’s appearance. Emerald cut engagement rings are a good choice for jewels with unusual color or clarity.

Baguette cut diamonds are thin rectangular jewels, often on the smaller side. This cut is hundreds of years old, with examples dating to the Renaissance. Today’s baguettes are step cut and come in two variations, one with two sets of parallel lines and one that is slightly tapered. Both types are commonly used as accents, such as side stones or halos. Baguettes are also used to form intricate designs.

Pear cut diamonds made their first appearance in 1902. It was designed by Joseph Asscher as a square stone with cropped corners and three rows of facets on the upper and lower halves, with 58 in total. A variant known as the Royal Asscher cut premiered in 2001, featuring 16 additional facets which make it unusually brilliant for a step cut stone. Either cut may appeal to someone who wants a diamond engagement ring out of the ordinary.

Triangular shaped diamonds can be either brilliant or step cut. The latter may appeal to those who want a vintage look to their rings as well as a shape that stands out from others. Triangular diamonds serve as both central jewels on a band as well as side stones, accenting the primary jewel.
