Stem cells therapy is a futuristic treatment option; getting predominant due to its ability to cure variety of deadly, debilitating disorders, with the theory of regeneration. Medical fraternity is more keen to understand the potential of these mighty cells and the hurdles that need to be taken over, before implementing these options as a routine treatment.

Stem cells are the basic, biological unit in the human development, with the capacity to transform into different cells, at different developmental stages. Thus, depending upon the stage of development, these cells have been metamorphosed into cells of different potency. This is the reason, why embryonic stem cells have the highest potency and bone marrow cells isolated from the adult are multipotent in nature. Even, after the complete development of human beings; these cells, which are known to be adult stem cells, remain dormant in different organs. Once the organs are in the crisis and need immediate supply of cells, due to certain pathological condition; stem cells can be elicited by the organ, with the stimulation of certain signals. As stem cells get activated, they can be differentiated to give rise to cells of required specificity to manage the gap that has been created due to a diseased condition.

In reality, there is no seen or unseen limit to cure different types of diseases. These stem cells have the capacity to make breakthroughs in any disease; if the route of administration is fine tuned. Many clinical studies are on the way and have been channelized to assess maximum recovery and many of them have already been approved.

An autologous application of stem cells, isolated from bone marrow has been the most trusted and widely accepted treatment modality. These were the first stem cells that were isolated from the human body and processed in the laboratory to be utilized for many cancer patients. Since then, it has become a gold standard treatment for variety of leukaemia patients, worldwide.

It is quite a true that only few stem cells therapies have been approved with the FDA; however there is a long way to widespread utilization of these novel treatments, due to many steps that must be through, in order to prove their safety and efficacy.  However, scientists if gave up on therapies; simply because of the hardship they are facing for approval; there would not have any of the life saving technologies that are now used routinely.

Moreover, an accumulated data from various clinical studies have not shown any negative effects so far. Thus, although stem cells treatment has to still drive a long way; it is definitely a better options for debilitating disorders, for which currently no option available.
