Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act
The SEZ (Special Economic Zone) policy came in India in the early 2000 (1st April to be precise). The main objective was to enhance foreign investment and also to provide an internationally competitive and hassle-free format for exports. The aim here was to promote exports from India since it was realized & accepted that there was a growing need for resources & accessibility to be made available for the domestic enterprises & manufacturers to be globally competitive. SEZ’s are located within a country's national borders, and they ease the following:-
- increased trade and increased investment
- job creation and effective administration
Financial schemes and beneficial policies are introduced for encouraging businesses to participate in the SEZ zones. The policies typically consider investing, taxation, trading, quotas, customs and labor regulations. Additionally, there are other benefits like example tax holidays, whereby a company that has established in a SEZ maybe granted a period of lower taxation.
An important factor today for organisations is the Shops and Establishments Act, enacted by every state in India to regulate conditions of work and to provide for statutory obligations of the employers and rights of the employees in un-organized sector of employment and other establishments in their jurisdiction. Few of the regulations under this act are :
- Working hours per day / week
- Guidelines for opening / closing hours, regular holidays, national and religious holidays, overtime work format etc.
- Rules for employment of children, young persons & women
- Rules for annual leave, maternity leave, sick leave, casual leave, etc.
- Rules for employment and termination of service
- Maintenance of registers, records and display of notices
- Obligations of employers as well as employees
