1)    Begin with an unpeated Scotch
Although most whisky drinkers sketch peat – that forcefully smoky character derived from heating the barley over a fire of the turf-like material of the same name – as the defining characteristic of Scotch, not all Scotch whisky is peated. Only 5% to 15% of all Scotch is peated, majority of distilleries utilise coal to heat their barley during the malting process instead. Unpeated, or lightly peated, Scotch whiskies are ideal for beginners due to their aroma and flavour of peat which could be too aggressive when you dip a toe into the segment.

2)    Find our single malts
There are primarily six areas in which Scotch may be extracted, and each produces its own distinctive style of whisky. Some regions, especially Islay and the Islands, are heavily known for saline, extremely peated versions of Scotch that may seem a bit punitive to new Scotch drinkers.

3)    Understand the way to smell a Scotch
One of the reasons that makes Scotch awesome is its intricacy of aromas, but sniffing into the glass will just result into a nose full of alcohol-fuelled burn. Instead of whirling the glass or smelling it powerfully, hold the glass a finger away from the nose and sniff moderately. If you’re encountering trouble experiencing any aromas, try sheltering the glass opening completely with a hand to distillate the scents in one region, then putting the hand away and inhaling lightly.

4)    Try to add some water
When a dram of Scotch is served at a bar or restaurant, it is often escorted by a dropper of water and a few ice cubes. Don’t notice including water to the glass as an indicator of weakness; most bars in Scotland feature jugs of water place on the bar for this precise objective, as it improves the character of the Scotch.
