Simple and Important Devices – Water Purifier

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)
Pure and clean drinking water is difficult to get nowadays. Growing population, industrial development, and environmental degradation are some of the main causes for this. Given this situation, it’s even more important to be aware of purification techniques and the water purifiers that are available in the market.

There are a lot of minerals that are found naturally in the water and are also important for the human body, but if you consume them in excess amounts, it can cause many harmful diseases. A good water purifier helps to remove the excess salts, suspended particles & microbes, retaining the essential vitamins and minerals. With so many filter manufacturers these days, it has become difficult to know which is good, which isn’t, and which meets the necessary standards.

Both, water filters and purifiers work on the same mechanical principle. They suck up the raw contaminated water, filter out the impurities ranging from sediments to micro-organisms, and then dispense clean water. However, there are a lot of differences between the two. A purifier can help in removing the viruses and bacteria that filters are unable to do. Some purifiers even use chemicals and other electro-static charges to kill or capture viruses.

Types of purification techniques:

Do you know that one of the earliest methods of water purification was just to add chlorine to the water? It releases hydrochloric acid that reacts with the micro-organisms and kills them. However, because of its negative effect on health and its ineffectiveness to kill certain types of protozoa, this technique lost its popularity. There are various types of water purifiers available in the market like:

Active Carbon filter:

This type of filter is used to purify soluble gases like chlorine, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, ammonia, and organic materials like dead algae, leaves, or other dead things. But the porous nature of the carbon can help it absorb chlorine and pollutants such as pesticides. Generally, household carbon filters come with an activated silver lining that can help to kill bacteria.

Reverse Osmosis filters:

RO water purifier with copper tank is the only filter available in this form. Reverse Osmosis or RO system offers a multi-stage filtration of water by combining the active carbon and particle filtration. The tap water is made to pass through a membrane with very small-sized pores that weeds out minerals & micro-organisms from the water. The collected impurities are flushed out through an outlet pipe. RO purifiers can improve the taste of water. RO filters are even recommended for places where the water has a high content of dissolved minerals. There are many best RO water purifiers available in the market to select from.

Ultra Violet (UV) filters:

UV light is known as a minimum level of radiation which is passed on the water to kill the bacteria and other microbes by attacking the DNA. These filters also help to remove pesticides by up to 99%, and it are effective in removing all types of pathogens. However, this doesn’t help in removing suspended particles, taste, chemicals, smell, or color.

Biosand filter:

It consists of a concrete or plastic box that is filled with layers of sand and gravel that removes pathogens and suspended solids from contaminated water. Water is poured in the top of the filter and collected in a safe storage container. Bacteria and other micro-organisms that grow in the sand are called the biolayer. The micro-organisms eat away the pathogens in the water, improving the quality of water. It also helps in removing suspended particles and pathogens.

Ceramic filters:

Ceramic filters are also known as hollow cylinders made from clay mixed with a combustible material like sawdust, rice husks, or coffee husks. These filters also drain out the bacteria through the small-sized pores, removing chlorine and E. coli up to 99%. The safe storage capacity also prevents water from getting contaminated.
