Water Purification Technologies for Removing Contaminants

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)

Water pollution has risen to a level that there is an essential need to use water purification. When you take in dirty water, it affects your internal system in a certain way that it gets weak and eventually you fall sick.

With the advancement of technology, we can see that too many people have been using the water filter. You can Buy RO water purifier in India and ensure proper health. There are several technologies that have been put to use to remove contaminants. If you are now wondering what they are, well, here we are going to discuss that.

  • Distillation

Distillation is known to be one of the oldest methods of water purification where water is heated to boil. In this process, water vapor tends to rise to a condenser where cooling water declines the temperature. As a result, the vapor is condensed, collected and stored. Usually, in most condition, contaminants persist behind in the liquid phase vessel. Although, organics cannot be removed efficiently when they have a boiling point lower than 100 °C. in such cases, they become concentrated in the product water. Large amounts of energy and water are needed for Distillation.

  • Ion-Exchange

in the process of ion-exchange water is infiltrated through bead-like spherical resin materials. There happens an exchange of Ions in the water for other ions fixed to the beads. There are two popular ion-exchange methods, namely softening and deionization. In the process of Softening, pretreatment method is used where water hardness is reduced prior to reverse osmosis (RO) processing. Softeners usually contain beads that cause an exchange of two sodium ions for every calcium or magnesium ion which is filtered from the "softened" water.

In the process of Deionization, beads tend to exchange either hydrogen ions for cations or hydroxyl ions for anions. Resins exchange is caused by cation and its made of styrene and divinylbenzene. In this contains sulfonic acid groups and hydrogen ion for any cations which are encountered is exchanged. In the same way, the anion exchange resins which is made of styrene and contain quaternary ammonium groups. They exchange hydroxyl ion for any anions. hydrogen ion right from the cation exchanger blends with the hydroxyl ion of the anion exchanger and as a result, pure water is formed. Deionization is considered to be a significant component of a total water purification system that is used in combination with other methods. It is with the help of DI systems that ions are effectively removed but sometimes, it may be found that most organics aren’t effectively removed as those microbes attach to the resins and make way for a culture media for rapid bacterial growth.

  • Carbon Adsorption

In the process of carbon adsorption, it is supported by the diameter of the pores present in the carbon filter and also by the diffusion rate of organic molecules that comes through the pores. The rate of adsorption is a function of the molecular size of the organics and molecular weight. There are certain granular carbons that amazingly remove chloramines. Carbon has the capacity to remove free chlorine and take care of other purification media which Is sensitive to an oxidant such as chlorine present in the system. in the design of a water purification system, the placement of carbon with respect to other components is an important consideration. It's important to find the difference between filters as they serve very different functions. Depth filters come handy as they are an economical way to get rid of 98% of suspended solids and they have the capacity to take care of elements downstream from clogging or fouling and as a result, they are used as pre-filters.
