Shopping in Sayulita: Huichol tradition and modern fashion trends

by Wesley Jones Sayulita Guide

Among the highlights of Sayulita are definitely the eclectic shopping options.

It is one of the few places in Mexico where you have a great variety of souvenirs and all originally made. In fact, many shops showcase their own productions of art and crafts.

From beach wear to decorative objects or accessories, or home decor you will find everything you need for your own treat or as an outstanding souvenirfor your friends and family at home.

What stand out among other crafts, are the stunning colorful patterns that appear in paintings, decorative objects, books and sometimes in clothing as well. These patterns have no equals and they belong to the ancient Huichol tradition.

Huichol Tradition

The Huichol art originates in the local communities of the Sierra Madre Mountains, although it stretched throughout the State of Jalisco and Nayarit, where Sayulita beach is located.

Thanks to their remote location the Huichol ( orWirrarika) community managed to protect and conserve this magnificent art, which for them is more than a beautiful fancy decoration, as it represents most of all a functional purpose and a profound religious meaning.

In fact, the word, Huichol, whose original name is Wirrarika, means soothsayer or medicine man.

This is represented by the Shaman the elected by the gods and the one who can make the connection between the other world and the humans on this earth.

Art is a way to communicate with the divinity and to ensure health and prosperity.

For the Huichol population religion plays a very important role in life and it is necessarily connected with art itself.

God is responsible for everything that happen in this life, including their ability to produce art. Divinity is in everything and everywhere, in every stone or plant.

There is no religion without art and there is no art without religion.Religion is life.

During their rituals, they communicate with the Gods who inspire them to find their creativity and inspirations

In return for the gift of making art that they receive, they donate offerings such as pictures, masks and candles which are considered material forms of prayer.
