Since SEO first became a reputable subset of digital advertising, it’s managed to impact businesses of all sizes across the U.S. from Utah to the Big Apple. However, in particular, SEO has amplified the success of small businesses both inside and outside of the aforementioned state of Utah and nationally known corporations.

With the growing success and relevance of search engine optimization, it almost seems like a no brainer that the subject should be taught to students pursuing business careers, so why isn’t there a major geared specifically towards learning and developing skills within the field of SEO?

One reason why SEO is not a college major is because it is constantly changing. In fact, according to Terakeet, it is “…one of the fastest changing industries” out there. The patterns and trends of search engine optimization are not consistent enough for them to be taught as part of a major’s coursework, seeing as how it can’t be guaranteed that they’ll be relevant once a student has graduated from college.

Search Engine Journal states that, in almost all cases, SEO is based on quality and creativity. There are so many different techniques and approaches for SEO that have proven to be successful. This goes to show that SEO does not have a “one-size-fits-all” formula that can necessarily be taught to students.

Just because SEO is not a major on college campuses does not mean students who want to get into search engine optimization are doomed. There are several colleges and universities, such as the University of Utah, that offer a wide variety of majors that focus on specific skills and topics ideal for careers in search engine optimization. Some of these majors include journalism, statistics, business and marketing.

Another way to gain experience and education in search engine optimization is to follow SEO blogs. There are countless blogs out there that post advice for SEO professionals and keep followers updated on the latest news within the subject.

One last way that aspiring search engine optimization professionals can get experience is through a work-study program or internship. Opportunities such as these give students hands-on experience. This experience gives students a clear idea of what to expect when going into a career involving or specializing in SEO. There are businesses and corporations everywhere, from Utah to the Midwest, that specifically look for people to help boost SEO.

Although there is no specific major dedicated to search engine optimization, aspiring students are not at a total loss. With the combination of educational courses and real-life experience with the subject, students everywhere have the potential to succeed.
