Selecting the Right Drapery for Your Home Décor

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

Curtains can make or break your rooms. Choosing the correct window treatments can do a lot to help you achieve the mood and ambience you want. The slew of options out there, though, may leave you at a complete loss as to what to choose. No worries. Here’s a handy guide we prepared to help you pick out options that will suit your home.

Start with the colors

What kind of colors will work for your existing rooms? Do you want your drapes to pick up the dominant hues and tones in your rooms? Then you’re going for a monochrome scheme. Neutrals will work too since they go with everything. If you want to add a bit more color to a neutral palate, then pick out curtains that add a pop of color to your rooms. If you can’t find the exact shade you want, you may need to consider getting custom drapery.

Look for darker shades

If you’re putting up curtains in rooms that receive plenty of sunlight, get fabrics in darker shades. Sunlight will make your curtains fade much faster. Curtains in darker colors will survive longer, though, so that’s one reason why you’ll want to steer clear of bright colors, Elle Decors says.

Choose a fabric

You have a ton of options when it’s time to choose the material. You can go for linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet since these curtains are great for window treatments. The materials hang perfectly, with faux silks ranking high on the durability scale. If you’re looking for the right material to put in your sunny rooms, then think about getting faux silk. You could also explore cotton curtains. These can bring a neat and crisp feel to your rooms.

Play with prints and patterns

It’s fun to mix and match. However, there is a slight danger of going overboard. If you already have patterned furniture or bedding, then it’s wise to restrict your selection to custom drapes in solid colors. Small, neutral prints can work the best for your curtains too. Big prints can create a dramatic impression but can give off too much of a busy energy, which may not be a good idea if you want that space to have a relaxing vibe. For the basics, steer clear of mixing patterned furniture with patterned curtains or drapes with prints since that could create a cluttered and busy look. Again, that’s not going to induce a restful mood for your home.

Decide about the length

Don’t cut off your curtains abruptly. Curtains look their best when they’re hitting the floor or is past the lower portion of a window sill. Unless you’re putting curtains in the bathroom or kitchen where long curtains are impractical, pick longer lengths for your drapes. However, don’t go overboard and end up with inches of fabric pooling on the floor, Real Simple warns. That may look romantic if you’re going for billowing white linen, but they’re going to need a ton of maintenance. If you have a cat, you’re going to need to adjust or vacuum the drapes every time your cat sleeps on them.
