Scrum Master and Project Manager play a different role.

by Mamta Soni Internet Marketing Consultant

There has been a constant flow of an assumption and confusions regarding the role of Scrum Mater and the project Manager. Individuals assume that both play a same role. But actually both are totally different with each other in aspects of approached to projects in a company. There is no connection in tasks or responsibilities of both as Scrum Master, does not play the part of the traditional project manager. Actually the fact if you are looking for project manager that means you need to approach the product owner as project manager is closely associated to product owner.

You may find discussions or LinkedIn posting pertains to this subject in some formal way of reaching a resolution but nobody has done a really good job of explaining how the two roles (Scrum Master and Project Manager) co-exist or how this role confusion started in the first place. The confusion arises because the serum master methodologies significantly impacted the product manager role together with affecting the product owner role. In our opinion Scrum Master, does not play the part of the traditional project manager. In fact, the Scrum Master is an entirely new role.

The basic difference between the two

However the both role seems much co-related but there is a basic difference between the two. Project manager is a person who has the responsibility of the planning and execution of a project by participating directly in the activities that produce the end result, but rather strives to maintain the progress, mutual interaction and tasks of various parties in such a way that reduces the risk of overall failure, maximizes benefits, and minimizes costs. In short his job is to successfully execute and complete the assigned project. He is the one who manages a team and direct them in right directions to accomplish the project perfectly and within a dead line.

On the other hand The Scrum Master doesn't manage the team that produces the work, instead he supports the Product Owner, coaches the team and makes sure that Scrum processes are adhered to. The Scrum Master is responsible for the Scrum process, its correct implementation, and the maximization of its benefits. The Scrum Master has to coach the Product Owner to help them understand how to achieve their goals and how to continually adapt and priorities their backlog.
