If your tail light is not lighting up or is broken, you don’t necessarily need to head down to the mechanic to have it repaired. For a simple fuse of light replacement you can repair the tail lights yourself and save money.

Remember, you can be cited by an officer if your tail lights aren’t working properly, so avoid wasting time and read on to learn more on how you can fix them:

#1-Check the fuse

A blown fuse might cause both the tail lights to go out. However, on the latest models tail lamps can be fused separately. A fuse can be blown due to a number of problems but this is the right place to start. Check the owner’s manual to locate the fuse box and use a flashlight to inspect it. If the piece of metal inside the fuse is intact, it’s good to go. However, if the piece of metal is broken it will need to be replaced. Simply bring the fuse to an auto store, purchase a new one and replace it.

#2-Check the tail light wiring

Check the trunk and look for wires that lead to tail lights. You will easily be able to see where the wires should connect in order for the electrical system to work properly. If a wire seems lose, reattach it.

#3-Check the bulbs

If both the wire and fuse seems right, the problem might be in the bulb itself. Unscrew the lens with the help of a screwdriver, then unscrew the bulb and inspect it in the manner you would check a bulb in your home. If the bulb is burnt, you will need to take it to your local auto store and purchase a replacement. It is advised that you use high quality LED tail light bulbs to avoid frequent replacements.

#4-Check the lens

Whether you were able to fix your tail light by checking the fuse or bulb, it is important that you check the tail light lens to make sure it is not cracked or broken. Remember, water entering a tail light can easily fuse the bulb. Use a tail light repair kit for easy repairs.

#5-Check the fixture

Overtime, the tail light fixtures on your car might end up shaking or vibrating and causing damage to the bulb inside. Keep your eyes on the tail light fixture and tighten it when necessary to avoid costly problems.
