Reducing Your Child's Fear of the Dentist
by Kevin Smith AuthorIt’s
estimated that 30 to 40 million people are afraid of the dentist. Because of
this fear, many are neglecting their regular appointments, causing severe
dental issues. For most, this fear begins at a young age. To prevent
dentophobia, and to make dental care in Newnan easier, ease your child’s mind
by preparing them for their first dental visit properly.
Choose the Right Dentist
Your
child will never learn to love the dentist if the dentist isn’t loveable. It’s
important to find a dentist that cares for your child and has a great bedside
manner. Look for a dentist who comes highly recommended, and who has experience
in handling children’s dental needs. Don’t be afraid to visit various offices
or ask questions before deciding to see a specific dentist. The more
comfortable your child feels, the more likely they are to continue dental
visits in the future.
Prepare for the Visit
While
some parents may surprise their children with trips to the dentist, it’s
probably a better idea to prepare them ahead of time. Read books, watch shows
that show dental visits. Then, discuss what visiting the dentist is like. Many
kids are terrified of the dentist simply because they don’t know exactly what
to expect once they arrive. By simply explaining what will happen during the
appointment, you’ll dispel fears and misconceptions. You may also consider
pretending to play dentist with stuffed animals or dolls to give your child an
even better idea of what their appointment will entail.
Know What to Expect
During
the first appointment, your dentist is going to want to get an in-depth look at
your child’s mouth. Various x-rays, bite tests, and cleanings will all be part
of the process. Your dentist may perform all parts of the exam and cleaning
themselves or they may enlist the help of hygienists and assistants. No matter
how the first visit is conducted, be sure to stay next to your child and soothe
them if needed. Answer any questions that they may have to ensure that they
remain calm and comfortable the entire time.
Keep Your Own Appointments
Your
child will learn from you. If you don’t place an emphasis on scheduling and
keeping your own dental appointments, neither will they. Lead by example by
visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing and flossing regularly.
Reduce
the amount of anxiety your child feels when beginning their dental care in Newnan.
With these tips, and by creating healthy oral habits at home, they won’t dread
seeing their dentist now or in the future.
