Redefined Retail After Pandemic

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
As the covid-19 continues to have an adverse impact on most industries, the retail sector too has witnessed unfortunate disruption. With the worsening situation, people started to shun human contact. Economic crisis, proper hygiene, and social distancing devastated the spending sentiment of the consumers. They likely spend on bare essentials only.

Although all shops except those in containment zones are given relaxation but restoring peoples’ habits, brand loyalty, shopping behavior, demands and other changes in consumers’ attitude is the matter of concern. The new normal in social distancing is turning people to believe in the concept of sustainability.

To stop the spread of contagious disease at retail level; there are certain things to be taken care of. Practicing social distancing, digital payments, disinfecting surfaces, safe delivery, and compulsory masks is how we can contribute. Life after covid-19 is all about new emerging trends we’re going to witness. Challenges need to serve people via their preferred channels.  Let’s have a look at what new trend the pandemic has brought to our table.

Buying apparel, furniture and other such items is now limited to online business mostly. Traditional way of shopping is becoming an outdated trend due to health and safety concerns. Shifting demands is building a new consumer psyche of not spending unnecessarily and choosing from a plethora of options online. However it’s time to mend fences for brick and mortar business, there are still some retailers who don’t need to worry.

Food and Beverages

Fancy a bite of royal cakes from cake shops in saket? Bread talk from Select Citywalk delivers one of the best cakes at your doorstep. Food delivery fights even gripped small towns in India. We’re witnessing a lot of interesting changes. Culture of dining out is dusting but hogging on outside food still continues.

Liquor

Relaxed lockdown norms bring cheer to liquor. To kill anxiety and boredom, binge drinking is what you and I prefer. Long queues outside liquor stores are the proof of flourishing business.

Pharma industry

The future of retail pharmacy is going to be hyper local. Pharmacy around every community made it accessible for people to visit or order the required medicine. Thanks to E-pharma.

Mass Merchandise Store

Supermarkets usually sell essentials. However hypermarkets might face the brunt of this lockdown because most of them are located in malls. The inventory present there needs to be cleared with heavy discounts whereas other products with lower shelf life might have to be written off.

How consumers behave after this pandemic will be the interesting reorganization of the retail segment. Gyms, theatres, pubs and other businesses will have to re-imagine the way things will work. To interact with brands, people are no longer obsessed with speed but mostly safety and other health concerns. This contagious disease will change things like never before. What we buy and from where we buy will evolve a whole new business. It’s time to face the fact and start accepting the changes.
